Megmeet Ethernet IP module with Fairino: device to device limitation

This thread explains why a Megmeet Ethernet/IP module may not connect directly to a Fairino robot controller without an intermediate master device.

Status

Known answer. If both sides are configured as Ethernet/IP devices/adapters, they cannot establish a direct device-to-device control link. A scanner/master is required.

Typical situation

  • A welding power source or module exposes Ethernet/IP as a device/adapter.
  • The Fairino fieldbus card also works as a device/adapter in the intended setup.
  • Both sides wait for a scanner/master, so no direct communication is established.

Practical solution

  • Add a PLC or industrial controller that acts as the Ethernet/IP scanner/master.
  • Let the PLC read/write data from both devices.
  • Map only the required welding signals: start, stop, program number, current, voltage, ready, fault, etc.
  • If the welding source supports Modbus TCP or digital I/O, those may be simpler alternatives.

  • Whether you have a PLC in the system

Hi Tomek,

Thanks for creating this very useful thread and thanks for your help and support.

We have the following system:

  1. Fairino FR10 (with AC 2000 W controller which has two Ethernet ports) and supports Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU. It also has Analog IO interface on the controller. I don't know about the other protocols if it supports.

  2. Megmeet Ehave2 CM500M

  3. Two separate communication Modules we have on the Megmeet are:

    1. Ethernet IP

    2. DeviceNet


What we are missing? A proper documentation for setting up Megmeet and Fairino to communicate.

We don't have any PLC in the system. We prefer a direct communication between Fairino and Megmeet if possible.
