This thread collects notes about using a Kemppi welding machine with a Fairino robot over Modbus TCP.

Status

Partial checklist. Not everything is solved yet, so working setups are very welcome.

Reported problems

  • SmartTool inserts ArcStart(0,0,1000), while one user reports that the first parameter selects the I/O type: 0 for controller I/O, 1 for expansion I/O and 2 for Modbus.
  • It is not clear how to set Weld machine control mode, so that parameter sets in the power source can be used.
  • One user could not create the control file for a Kemppi Master M 358 G with DCM.

What is known

  • In our test, running a welding machine program through SmartTool did not work.
  • The V3.9.8 release notes added process number selection for arc start instructions in the SmartTool settings, so it is worth testing again on a newer version.
  • Check the first ArcStart parameter in the Lua code after inserting the command.
  • Kemppi publishes a fieldbus interface table for DCM.

Seam tracking

We have no confirmed report of seam tracking with Kemppi yet. Fairino Europe support said that over Modbus TCP the welder reports actual voltage and current to the controller, and that the result depends on correct gain and direction settings.

  • Whether parameter sets or seam tracking work for you
